The short answer: what solar costs in Texas in 2026

As of mid-2026, residential solar in Texas averages roughly $2.20 to $3.00 per watt installed. Because the typical Texas home installs a larger-than-average system to cover heavy summer air-conditioning loads, the average system size lands around 11–13 kW. That puts a common all-in price in the range of $24,000 to $34,000 before any incentives or financing.

A few things move that number up or down: the quality of the panels and inverter you choose, whether you add battery storage, the complexity of your roof, and which installer you work with. Larger systems usually cost less per watt because of volume, even though the total bill is higher.

What drives the price of a Texas solar system

Roughly speaking, the cost of a solar installation breaks down into equipment (panels, inverter, racking, and any battery), labor, permitting and inspection, and the installer’s overhead. In Texas, a few local factors matter more than in other states:

The federal residential tax credit has ended. The 30% federal credit that homeowners used to claim on their own taxes (Section 25D) expired on December 31, 2025. If you buy a system outright in 2026, you generally cannot claim that personal credit anymore. Any site still promising homeowners “30% back on your taxes” for a cash or loan purchase is working from old rules.

Texas property tax exemption. Texas offers a 100% property tax exemption for the added home value from a solar system (Tax Code Section 11.27). Your home is worth more with solar, but you are not taxed on that increase — a permanent, ongoing saving.

Local utility programs. There is no statewide Texas rebate, but some providers offer their own. Austin Energy, for example, has offered a rebate for its customers, and Oncor has run battery incentive programs. Solar buyback plans from retail providers typically pay somewhere around $0.04–$0.12 per kWh for the power you export — the rate varies a lot, so it pays to compare plans.

The new way to capture the savings: prepaid financing

Here is the part most Texas homeowners haven’t heard yet. Even though the personal federal credit has ended, the savings didn’t disappear — they moved. Newer prepaid financing products let a finance partner own the system and claim the federal incentive that businesses can still access, then pass roughly a 30% discount straight through to you as lower up-front pricing.

In practice that means you can often go solar with little or no money down and a monthly payment designed to sit below your current electric bill, without needing a big tax appetite of your own. Programs like Concert/Propel and Credit Human/Participate are built around this model. It is a different structure than the old “buy it and claim the credit yourself” approach, and for many households it is now the more affordable path. Availability and terms depend on your situation, so it is worth having someone walk through the numbers for your specific home.

How net metering works (and doesn’t) in Texas

Unlike states with mandated one-to-one net metering, Texas leaves export compensation up to individual retail electricity providers. Some offer generous “solar buyback” plans; others offer little or nothing for the power you send back to the grid. Before you install, it is worth lining up a buyback-friendly electricity plan, and in many cases pairing the system with a battery so you use more of your own production rather than exporting it cheaply.
